Israeli Lt. Colonel, Golan Vach, head of the military search and rescue service, said this during a press briefing in Holit Kibbut on 14 October 2023.
Vach: "This destruction is due to the attack by our tanks."
Reporter 1: "This place where you found the couples?"
Vach: "Where you stand exactly were lying two couples, two men, two women, handcuffed. And inside this house were another 15 burnt people, among them eight babies. They were concentrated them and they killed them, and they burned them."
Reporter 1: "Did you see?"
Vach: "I evacuated them."
Reporter 1: "But why is the destruction then? I'm sorry. Why is the destruction? It looks a, more like a..."
Vach: "This destruction was a cause of our tanks attack.
Reporter: "Fired on them."
Vach: "Yeah. Yeah. Because they were blocked in these houses, and we needed to conquer back the whole settlement and it couldn't be happened without the tanks."
Reporter 1: "OK."
Reporter 2: "So, how many were here and how many survived? How many did you..."
Vach: "No one survived from this house... From this house 19 people died, among them 8 children."
So what is Vach saying here?
That Hamas killed 19 people in this one house, after which the IDF blew it to bits?
Or that he found 19 people dead inside the house after 'the attack by our tanks?'
Maybe he's saying something in between. Maybe he's saying Hamas killed and burned some people and some may have been killed by friendly tank fire.
I just wonder why Hamas would go to the bother of burning the bodies of those they killed. I doubt they would. If they killed the people in the house, I think they'd have shot off sharpish, as soon as the tanks and the IDF soldiery appeared in force.
I think it's likely that the bodies that were burned were burned by tank fire. Whether they were alive at the time, I don't know.
